From muguet at mdpi.net Fri May 2 02:46:14 2008 From: muguet at mdpi.net (Dr. Francis MUGUET) Date: Fri, 02 May 2008 02:46:14 +0200 Subject: [Wsis-pct] WSIS C3 Access to Knowledge & Free Software Message-ID: <481A6456.5050900@mdpi.net> The image Happy May first to all ! This is a rather propitious date to re-awake the group, after a long winter lethargy, with good news. Following a meeting between Richard Stallman and Miriam Nissbet the head of the Information Society Division at UNESCO, that went very well, and further negotiations, our informal information is that the FSF should be designated by UNESCO as a moderator of the theme * Diversity of Software Models *in the action line **C3 Access to Knowledge* *. This has to be confirmed and announced officially. Also after brainstorming informal and friendly discussions with UNESCO, the theme of the next **C3 Access to Knowledge* *. action line meeting ( Geneva, Switzerland, *19 May 2008*, ITU Headquarters, Room C2 15:00 - 17:00) more info on the 12-23 May 2008 Cluster of WSIS-related events ( Geneva ) is going to be about Free Software.as an overall theme of the meeting of this year. Although the meeting duration is short, the political significance of the meeting cannot be dismissed. We are going to build some synergy with the Linuxdays ( 21-22 May 2008, Geneva ) There is another meeting where the input of Free Software activists could be important : **C5 CyberSecurity * * The 3rd Facilitation Meeting on Action Line C5 : is going to last for two days. (22 May 2008 - 23 May 2008, ITU Headquarters, Rooms K1 and K2 9:30 - 13:00 and 14:30 - 17:30 ) Last year, I defended in this meeting the concept of security through openness vs the concept of security through obscurity. I also underlined the problems of the bots, or enslaved ( almost only Windoze ) machines that are a real plague. In a second message, you will find the invitation for another interesting meeting, an area where Free Software is making some progress **C7 e-learning* : * Open Consultative meeting on low-cost devices for education: ICT Applications: E-learning ( ITU Headquarters, Room B2, 9:00 - 12:30 and 14:00 - 17:30 ) All the best Francis -- ------------------------------------------------------ Francis F. What is the way forward? * UNESCO and infoDev (The World Bank) would like to invite you to participate in the ?Low-cost Devices for Education? meeting taking place in the ITU, Geneva, Switzerland from 21 22 May 2008. This meeting will be open to all and will be an opportunity to learn the latest about numerous devices and share information about applications, experiences and approaches. More importantly, the event is designed to request input and invite collaboration in designing a series of activities (sponsored research, capacity building and outreach, needs assessments, evaluation tools) to help build consensus around common sets of practical issues and challenges with regard to low-cost devices, and to help aid all of our work. Partners and stakeholders from international organizations, private companies, universities, financial institutions, and civil society will join this event, which will take place alongside the follow-up meetings on the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva. The meeting will take be held at the office of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) on 21 May. Results from this meeting will be reported on and discussed during the official WSIS consultation meeting on e-learning (C7) at the ITU, on the afternoon of 22 May. The attached draft agenda gives you more details on the objectives of the meeting and topics of discussion. You may register for these meetings at http://www.itu.int/cgi-bin/htsh/edrs/ITU-SG/edrs21/edrs.registration.form Please note that you will need to check two boxes, one for each day: * 21 May 2008 -Open consultative meeting on low-cost devices for education (ITU, room B2) * 22 May pm - 3rd Facilitation Meeting on Action Line C7 e-learning, including low-cost devices for education (ITU, room A). Both meetings are open to all stakeholders; we look forward to seeing you in Geneva soon. Hope ITU, WSIS , Unesco and others will hand in hand supporting FSF... so that this affordable software can become world standard , despite of what WIPO in Geneva thinks about this copywrong and FSF movement ? We, SME in Indonesia doing Internet Cafes business ( we called it warnet in Indonesia) has been so frustrated with recent raids by the police that confisticated PCs that has illegal proprietary software ( windows and other proprietary applications ). Meanwhile we tried very hard to persuade people in Indonesia to use open source, despite many of SME are using pirated copies because this pirated copy are not well protected... and easily replicated and distributed illegally... I think the owner of this proprietary software should protect their software better against piracy and dont leave the task to the developing countries. Hoping that the Linux day will be a successfull event and the sphere of influence will spread global. Please send us documents related to this Linux activities, since we are unable to attend C3 and C5 that are so important to our industry REgards, Rudi Rusdiah APWKomitel ( Association of Community Internet Center / NetCafe) - Indonesia Dr. Francis MUGUET wrote: > > The image > > Happy May first to all ! > > This is a rather propitious date to re-awake the group, after a long > winter lethargy, > with good news. > > Following a meeting between Richard Stallman and Miriam Nissbet > the head of the Information Society Division at UNESCO, that went very > well, > and further negotiations, our informal information is that the FSF > should be designated by UNESCO as a moderator of > the theme * Diversity of Software Models > * in the action line **C3 Access to Knowledge* > *. I am not entirely glad that people promote open source, since I disagree with that philosophy. As an activist for free software (perangkat lunak bebas), I think the philosophical values of open source are inadequate. See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html for more explanation. And if they have a "Linux day", that means talking about my work and attributing it to someone else. See http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html. Meanwhile we tried very hard to persuade people in Indonesia to use open source, despite many of SME are using pirated copies because this pirated copy are not well protected... and easily replicated and distributed illegally... When you explain that they should switch to free software for the sake of their freedom, please do not use the propaganda term "pirated" to describe unauthorized copies. That term is propaganda for the same enemies that are behind these oppressive raids. Yang membantu temannya bukan lanun. (I am surprised I remembered that much of my mostly-forgotten Indonesian.) Please send us documents related to this Linux activities, since we are unable to attend C3 and C5 that are so important to our industry Please be fair to us -- please call them "GNU/Linux activities".
